Imphal, June 13 2013: Even though there is no concrete evidence about presence of drug manufacturing unit which uses pseudoephedrine as raw materials, the State Government has chalked out and implemented a number of strategies in order to check trafficking of illegal drugs, nab drug smugglers and award them befitting punishment.
This was stated by Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who is also in charge of Home Department in response to a call attention motion put up by Trinamool Congress State unit legislature wing leader Dr I Ibohalbi.
Acting on purported reports about presence of a manufacturing unit which converts pseudoephedrine drugs into some other illegal drugs at Moreh, police as well as other intelligence agencies have been making an intensive investigation.
However, no concrete evidence about the presence of such a drug manufacturing unit can be gathered so far.
Stating that Government and police alone can check the dangerous trend of drug smuggling, Gaikhangam asserted that NGOs and the general public need to join hands with the Government in the battle against drug smuggling.
“If we lose this battle, future generations would be in great peril”, Gaikhangam asserted.
He also appealed to all the people not to be self-centric or selfish to the extent of not giving any thought to the possibility of wiping out an entire generation in their pursuit for huge, easy money.
The Government is working hard to enact a new law more stringent than NDPS Act currently in force so that even properties of drug smugglers can be forfeited.
Raising the call attention, Dr Ibohalbi said that drug trafficking between India and Myanmar through Moreh started as early as 1980′s since border trade was opened between the two countries.
Huge profits have been earned by many people out of this illegal trade which is so alluring and lucrative that even military and police personnel were found engaged in smuggling huge consignment of drugs.
Observing that the situation is alarming, Dr Ibohalbi said that pseudoephedrine tablets are sent to Golden Triangle where the drug is re-processed to manufacture another illegal drug called ‘World is Yours’ which is again sent back to Manipur.
This drug is highly intoxicating and one tablet can keep a man awake for 24 hours.
Unfortunately, many youngsters of Manipur have set their eyes on this drug.
In addition to effective implementation of NDPS Act, it is advisable to set up NDPS Courts in every district so that drug smugglers can be put to trial and sentenced without unnecessary delay, Ibohalbi said.
