Check posts crowd ImphalJiri line

Source:

Jiribam, July 19 2013 : With a little over 30 check posts, NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam) is said to have the maximum number of check-posts in the State much to the chagrin of transporters along the highway.

The number of check posts along this highway, also known as the second lifeline of the State, has shot up since the recent past.

Vehicles travelling from Jiribam to Imphal or vice-versa have to make entries at more than 30 check posts.

Other than the check posts manned by the Army and CRPF, making entry at other check post means payment of ‘unaccounted tax money’ without which vehicles are denied passage.

Various check posts opened by different Departments including motor vehicle, excise, police, IRB, weight and measure, foreigner check gate and taxation from Imphal till Jiribam along the highway usually charged money to vehicles.

However, the amount of money collected by the check posts varied between passenger carrier vehicles and goods carriers.

Passenger carrier vehicles have to pay amount ranging from Rs 700 to Rs 1000 in a single trip while goods laden vehicles have to spend Rs 1500 to Rs 2000 in a single trip to reach their destination.

Ironically, no receipt/voucher has been given to the vehicles by the authorities concerned for the money the transporters paid.

It is against this backdrop that many transporters along the highway doubted that the check posts are set up by some vested officials as a means of earning ‘unaccounted’ money.

Interestingly, the police have set up the maximum number of check posts along this highway.

As such, many including transporters and travellers have the impression that the concerned personnel/officers might have greased the palm of the higher authority to get posting along this route.
