Imphal, July 18 2013: To register protest against rampant extortion from denizens of Jiribam by UG elements and to denounce the alleged act of the Assam Rifles in breaching the peaceful atmosphere of Jiribam through underground elements, the people of Jiribam today staged a sit in protest and held a silent rally under the aegis of Jiribam United Committee, a conglomeration of several Jiri based civil society organisations.
The demonstrators later stormed Jiribam PS demanding that general secretary of UTLA (SK Thadou), who was arrested couple of days back, be handed to the public.
A sit in protest was staged in front of Congress Bhawan, Babupara here today around 11am.The protesters then held a silent rally.
Banners and placards reading ‘We want peace,’ ’22AR don’t give boom to fake insurgency,’ ‘Manipur Home dept is ineffective,’ ‘Go back AR,’ etc were displayed during the sit-in and rally.
The rallyists marched till the Railway Crossing at Babupara, Jiri Bazar and finally a memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister through the ADC in-charge of Jiribam.
Later, the demonstrators stormed Jiri PS demanding the police to hand-over the general secretary of UTLA (SK Thadou), who has been accused of extorting money in the name of KRA (U).
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters at AJMP office, convenor of JUC, W Dinesh Singh said the public strongly denounced the extortion and threats issued to the denizens of Jiribam and the alleged harbouring of UG elements by the AR.
He warned that severe form of protest would be launched in the coming days if the authority concerned fails to resolve the matter.
Dinesh pointed out that businessmen of the area received threatening phone calls through Mob No 9862417946 in the name of KRA (U) even after keeping UTLA (SK Thadou) general secretary in the police custody.
The JUC convenor further suspected the involvement of the AR’s hand in issuing warning and threats to businessmen of Jiribam.
