Imphal, July 20 2013 : Candidates selected in the NEET scheme of examination for admission to MBBS/BDS courses have submitted memorandums to the Manipur Governor and Chief Minister urging their intervention for commencing counselling procedures to enable them pursue medical courses.

After a delegation of the selected candidates called on the Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh at around 12.40 pm today and handed over a representation, the same delegation accompanied by some parents/guardians highlighted their plight to the Governor at around 2 pm.

Even though the candidates were halted by police while proceeding towards the raj Bhavan after meeting the CM, they were allowed to hand over the memorandum after some time during which a brief exchange of heated words also ensued between the candidates and the security personnel.

With apparent reference to the State Medical Directorate likely to issue fresh notification for conducting MBBS/BDS entrance examination, Parents’ Association of Selected Candidates NEET UG-2013 secretary Y Tomba proposed that the State Cabinet reaffirm its decision on accommodating NEET successful candidates in medical institutions.

Noting Supreme Court of India recently quashing Medical Council of India’s NEET examination scheme, he said a total of 150 Manipuri candidates were declared to have qualified the NEET examination and their careers should not be compromised under any circumstance.

Apart from the NEET successful candidates already issued admit card and awaiting counselling process, the Government of Manipur too needs to taken appropriate measures to begin counselling at the earliest, Tomba expressed while highlighting that the apex court decree had also recommended admission of NEET successful candidates in medical colleges.

Contending that asking the NEET successful candidates to appear at the MBBS/BDS entrance test amounts to mental harassment, he pointed out that counselling for NEET successful candidates had already started in Assam and Uttarakhand States while in Delhi the same would commence from july 24 .

Reiterating that the Government of Manipur do the needful to accommodate the NEET successful candidates by conducting counselling, the secretary cautioned that if there is no positive measure taking legal recourse or staging various forms of protest, including hunger strike, against the State Government cannot be ruled out.
