Imphal, July 21 2013: With the last repairing work reportedly undertaken over 10 years back, the approach road to Manipur Zoological Garden is today in the worst possible condition thereby posing huge problems to visitors.

The State’s only protected enclave for animals, which include many endangered species, the Iroisemba facility is normally frequented by tiny tots, apart from adults, not only for merriment but as a part of the learning process beyond their classrooms.

Speaking to on condition of anonymity a zoo staff revealed that a number of official intimations had been forwarded to the State Government by Manipur Zoological Garden authority to repair the approach road but till date there has been no positive response.

Acknowledging that visitors have to endure severe inconveniences owing to the deplorable condition of the approach road, the staff exuded confidence that proper maintenance of the road will definitely attract significant number of visitors.

apart from their regular job, zoo personnel are constrained to protect different variety of birds that take shelter on trees grown within the zoo complex, said the staff adding that young birds falling from the branches has become a common feature.

As the fallen chicks are vulnerable to be trampled by the animals or devoured by carnivorous species the personnel have to eventually rescue and protect them till they are grown up, he maintained.

Accepting that the approach road needs to be repaired at the earliest, some visitors with whom this reporter interacted cautioned the crater-filled road claiming human casualty cannot be ruled out if the Government do not take positive action.

On the positive side, information has been received about the Central Zoo Authority approving a ‘master plan’ for the State zoo under which phase-wise renovation of about 400 animal enclosures would be carried out.

It is also said that new enclosures for leopards and the endangered Sangais would be constructed under the master plan.
