Source:

Imphal, July 24 2013: Protest demonstrations were staged at different street corners of the twin capital district to denounce grant of bail to those individuals who are accused of being involved in drug smuggling.

Under the aegis of Students’ League Manipur, street corner demonstrations were held today in front of Pioneer Academy and CC Higher Secondary School located at Palace Compound/Gate area, Meetei Mayek School (Kongba), Hijam Irabot Memorial School (Patsoi) and Polestar Public School, Sagoltongba.

The demonstrators put up banners/placards voicing strong opposition against granting bail to the drug smuggling accused, charged Indian army of encouraging illegal drug trade as well as demanded punitive action against the Home Minister and the Investigating Officer (IO) concerned in the drug smuggling cases.

asserting that the protest demonstrations will continue in the coming days, Students League Manipur advisor Ch Loken told reporters on the sidelines of the protest demonstrations that granting bail to Col Ajay Chowdhry and MLA TN Haokip’s son inspite of the overwhelming evidences, sounds fishy.

Reacting strongly against the bail granted to seven persons, including Ajay Chowdhry and the MLA’s son, inspite of their arrest with huge quantity of illegal drugs, Loken opined that the accused persons walking out of jail amounts to encouraging illegal drug trade in Manipur.

Expressing concern that the future generation of Manipur would be immobilised if there is no effective legal system to punish offenders, the advisor said arrest of the accused persons along with Rs 25 crore worth of illegal drug should be evidence enough to serve jail term for a long time.

If such a clandestine case of drug smuggling had occurred in some other countries severity of punishment would be obvious, he maintained.
