Imphal, July 22 2013: Strike supporters today torched a Gypsy belonging to the police at Hatta Golapati in Imphal East during the 48-hour general strike called by the JAC in connection with the killing of Md Naeemuddin.

Bandh enforcers turned out in large number at Hatta and its adjoining areas since early morning and blocked the road by piling up stack of woods and burning tyres.

Imphal East district police resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse the bandh supporters.

The bandh enforcers confronted the police by resorting to pelting of stones and sling-shots.

A Gypsy belonging to the police was later torched by the bandh supporters around 8 am.

The police were able to bring the situation under control only around noon.

In Bishnupur district, movement of vehicles was blocked at Kwakta along Imphal-Ccpur road by bandh supporters.

The bandh was strictly enforced at Sora, Sangaiyumpham and Moijing in Thoubal district.

Shops and markets remained closed at Yairipok.

The effect of the bandh was almost negligible in other parts of the State including Imphal.

Md Naeemuddin (12) was killed in a reported gunfight at Kakching Lamkhai on July 18 while others sustained injuries.

Police said the boy was killed in a clash between T Minou and Sora villagers while the JAC alleged that the boy died due to police firing.

A 48-hour general strike beginning from 6pm of Sunday was called by the JAC formed in connection with the killing of Naeemuddin in collaboration with some organisations like the All Manipur Muslim Co-ordinating Committee, United Muslim Women Welfare Organisation, Women Development Project, All Manipur Muslim Students’ Organisation, Pangal Students’ Organisation, Manipuri Students’ Federation and All Manipur Girl Students’ Union.
