Canal breaches

Source:

Imphal, June 30 2013: The right main canal of Thoubal Dam breached over a length of about 10 feet leading to inundation of some houses of Nongbrang village as well as paddy fields and fish farms.

In addition to the breached portion, water was overflowing over the canal over a length of about 200 feet which led to flooding of nine houses, three hectares of paddy fields and some fish farms.

Large scale damage was averted with timely intervention by the local people and department officials in the form of filling up the breached portion with earth and reinforcement of the canal’s bank where water was overflowing.

Speaking to media persons who went to the flooded area, Nongbrang Thumkhong Lairembi Youth Club secretary Nameirakpam Shyamjai said that water overflowing from Thoubal Dam right main canal is a regular occurrence as and when the dam is shut downstream because the canal’s embankment is too low and narrow.

Even as the matter has been informed to the relevant department repeatedly, no attention has been paid to the people’s woes.

Given such a lackadaisical attitude of the authority, a meeting of Nongbrang village was held recently and it decided to dig out the canal embankment and divert water to Thoubal river in case the existing embankment is not reinforced by putting additional earth within the next three days, Shyamjai said.
